Vimarsha
In the process of determining results through Jyotish Shastra, the Lagna (Ascendant) holds an exceptionally special place. For this reason Bhaskaracharya, accepting that the injunction of this time-governing science of Jyotish is Lagna-centred, laid particular stress on the accuracy (sphuta-ta) of the Lagna. As he says –
ज्योतिषशास्त्रफलं पुराणकैरादेश इत्युश्रच्यते
नूनं लग्नबलाश्रित:पुनरयं तत् स्पष्टखेटाश्रयम् ।
ते गोलाश्रयिणोऽन्तरेण गणितं गोलोऽपि न ज्ञायते
तस्माद्यो गणितं न वेत्ति स कथं गोलादिकं ज्ञास्यति ।।
‘लगतीति लग्नम्’ – that is, the zodiacal point (sign and so on) of the ecliptic (kranti-vritta) that is in contact with the eastern horizon at the time of the native’s birth is the true Lagna of that moment.
यत्र लग्नमपमण्डलं कुजे तद्गृहाद्यमिह लग्नमुच्यते।
प्राचि पश्चिमकुजेऽस्तलग्नकं मध्यलग्नमिति दक्षिणोत्तरे ।।
In the tradition of Indian astrology, the ecliptic is divided into 12 equal parts and the twelve signs beginning with Aries are conceived; through contact with the horizon of each place, these same twelve signs, Aries onwards, are read as the twelve Lagnas. Each Lagna takes, on average, 5 ghatikas, that is, 2 hours, to rise over the horizon. At sunrise the true Sun itself is the true first Lagna, because the true Sun, situated on the ecliptic in the same line, appears to be in contact with the horizon. At midday the true Sun of midday is itself the tenth Lagna, because the Sun on the ecliptic is in contact with the upper meridian. At sunset the true Sun of the evening is employed as the seventh Lagna, and the true Sun at midnight as the fourth Lagna; but by the word ‘Lagna’ it is mainly the first Lagna alone that is considered.
The Meaning of Lagna
This globe (the Earth) is constantly rotating on its axis, and it takes 24 hours to complete one cycle, which we also call a day. Thus, as the Earth rotates on its axis, it comes to face a particular sign situated on the ecliptic, and the Lagna of that sign is deemed to be rising at that time. In this way every part of the Earth remains under the influence of the zodiac, and the part of the Earth that faces a given sign has that particular Lagna established for it. As the Earth moves, that Lagna keeps passing away. Roughly one Lagna passes in about 2 hours. On average the Earth turns 1 degree on its axis in 4 minutes, completing 360 degrees in 24 hours. Hence the Lagna advances by 1 degree every 4 minutes. The sign in which the Sun is travelling is the very sign that stands on the horizon as the Lagna at sunrise. At whatever degrees and minutes of a sign the Sun is placed, the Lagna at sunrise is present at exactly those degrees and minutes as well. The motion of the Sun, which creates the two divisions of day and night, is extremely important. When it begins to travel in the first sign of the zodiac (Aries), the new year begins; when the Sun reaches 30 degrees of Pisces, the year ends. The Sun takes 24 hours to cover a distance of one degree, and during this period 12 Lagnas are established. The results of all these Lagnas, Aries onwards, are described separately in the texts on predictive astrology.
1. The Result of Aries (Mesha) in the Lagna
The lord of Aries Lagna is Mars. This Lagna includes within it the nakshatras Ashwini and Bharani and the first pada of Krittika. Aries is a masculine sign and a movable (chara) sign, that is, one that is always moving. Its element is fire. Its limbs are very strong. It has four feet. It is red in colour, hot in nature, of bilious (pitta) constitution, makes a deep sound, ranges over mountains, is cruel by nature, is the lord of the east direction, and its rising is crooked (reversed). It yields few offspring, is lustreless (kanti-hina), and belongs to the Kshatriya varna. All its limbs are of equal measure.
वृत्तेक्षणे दुर्बलजानुरूग्रो भीरूर्जले स्याल्लघुभुक् सुकामी।
सश्चारशीलश्चपलोऽनृतोक्तिर्व्रणाङ्किताङ्कः क्रियभे प्रजातः।।

Acharya Mantreshwara’s view is that a native born in Aries Lagna has round eyes, and is weak-kneed, sickly, afraid of water, a light eater, extremely lustful, a wanderer, fickle, untruthful, and has a body marked with the scars of vranas (boils, pimples and the like).
चण्डाभिमानी गुणवान् सकोपः सुहृद्विरोधी च सखा परेषाम्।
पराक्रमप्राप्तयशोविशेषो मेषोदये यः पुरूषोऽतिरोषः ।।
[Jatakabharana, Lagnaphala 01]
In the same vein, the author of the Jatakabharana holds that a person born in Aries Lagna is proud, virtuous, wrathful, hostile to his own friends, himself a friend to others, and one who attains fame through his own valour.
मेषे विलग्ने तु भवेत्प्रसूतश्चण्डो धनी सर्वकलासु दक्षः।
स्वपक्षहन्ता बहुमन्युयुक्तो मन्दमतिस्तीक्ष्णकरः सदैव।।

The view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka (Vriddhajavana Jataka) is worth noting: if one is born in Aries Lagna, the person is of fierce temper, wealthy, skilled in all the arts and in craftsmanship, shrewd in worldly dealings, a destroyer of his own side, extremely wrathful, dull-witted, and given to sharp (harsh) deeds.
मेंषलग्ने तु जातस्य राजयोगीऽपि लभ्यते।
चतुर्थपंचमाधीश संबन्धेन न संशयः ।।

Ramanujacharya, confirming his own view in the Bhavartha Ratnakara, says that if, in the birth chart of those born in Aries Lagna, the lords of the fourth and fifth houses are related to each other (by aspect, conjunction and so on), the native certainly attains a Rajayoga.
मेषलग्ने तु जातस्य धनसप्तमनायकः।
शुकः करोति निधनमिति ज्योतिषकाविदुः ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/02]
For those of this Lagna, Venus (in his dasha and antardasha) brings suffering equal to death, because in the chart of this Lagna Venus is the lord of the second and the seventh houses. Since both of these houses have been designated maraka (death-inflicting) by the Acharyas. According to Maharshi Parashara –
अष्टमो ह्यायुषः स्थानमष्टमादष्टमं च यत् ।
तयोरपि व्ययस्थानं मारकस्थानमुच्यते।।
From the birth Lagna, the eighth house, and the eighth from that eighth house, that is, the third house from the Lagna, are called the houses of longevity (ayu sthana). The twelfth from these, namely the seventh and the second, are called the maraka houses. Therefore Venus, as lord of the second and seventh, proves to be a maraka in his dasha-bhukti. But it is not necessary that every lord of the second and seventh proves to be a maraka, because for those of Libra Lagna it has been stated clearly in the section on that Lagna –
मेषलग्ने तु जातस्य स्फोट शस्त्रव्रणादिनम् ।
भयमस्ति च जगुः प्रायशो गणिकोत्तमाः ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/05]
Those born in Aries Lagna live with the fear of injury by weapons and of suffering from boils and the like.
2. The Result of Taurus (Vrisha) in the Lagna
The lord of this sign is Venus. In Taurus the Moon is exalted. Taurus is a fixed (sthira) sign, a feminine sign, of the earth element, cool in nature, lord of the south direction, moving over beautiful ground, vata-natured (windy), strong at night, quadruped, of clean (pure) colour, makes a loud sound, has moderate offspring, and belongs to the Vaishya caste. Taurus, the second sign of the Lagna chakra, is a fixed-natured, gentle sign. This sign signifies pleasure (comfort) in the human body; it is a prishtodaya sign (one that rises with its back). Its natural temperament is self-interested, discerning, hard-working, and skilled in worldly conduct. Taurus Lagna is counted among the best Lagnas. It represents the neck of Kalapurusha, and the emblem of Taurus is a bull with large horns on both sides, that is, the Vrishabha.
पृथूरूवक्त्रः कृषिकर्मकृत्स्यान्मध्यान्तसौख्यः प्रमदामियश्च।
त्यागी क्षमी क्लेशसहश्च गोमान् पृष्ठास्यपार्श्वोऽङ्कयुतो वृषोत्थः ।।

In the Phaladeepika, the Acharya has discussed the result of Taurus in the Lagna as follows. A person born in Taurus Lagna has a broad face and large thighs. The native earns his livelihood through agriculture, is happy in the middle and last parts of life, and is dear to women. He is a renunciant, forgiving, able to endure hardship, and gifted in singing. His body bears congenital marks on the flank (side).
गुणीग्रणी स्याद् द्रविणेन पूर्णो भक्तो गुरुणां हि रणप्रियश्च।
धीरश्च शूरः प्रियवाक् प्रशान्तः स्यात्पूरूषो यस्य वृषे विलग्ने ।।

In the same vein, the author of the Jatakabharana holds that a man born in Taurus Lagna is foremost among the virtuous, endowed with wealth, devoted to his elders and teachers, fond of battle, steadfast, pleasant of speech, and calm in mind.
वृषे विलग्ने तु नरः प्रसूतो मित्रं क्षमी हास्यरतः सुवाक्यः ।
विज्ञानयुक्तो गुरुलोकभक्तः शूरः प्रधानः सुतलालसश्च।।

Next, the view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka is worth noting: if one is born in Taurus Lagna, the person is faithful in friendship, forgiving, fond of humour and jesting, speaks beautiful words, possesses special knowledge, honours his ancestors and elders, is heroic, attains prominence, and desires sons.
वृषभजातस्य च शनिः भाग्यकर्मेश्चरोऽपि वा।
सूर्यसोमसुताभ्याम् वा न युक्रतौ नैव योगदः ।।

According to Acharya Ramanujacharya, other views are also worth noting: if one is born in Taurus Lagna, Saturn, though lord of the kendra (tenth) and the trikona (ninth), cannot give auspicious yogic results if it is not conjunct with the Sun and Mercury, and.
वृषभलग्ने तु जातस्य गुरोस्सोमसुतस्य च।
संबन्धो वीक्षणम् वाऽपि विद्यते धनयोगदः ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/05]
If the Lagna is Taurus and Jupiter and Mercury aspect each other or are placed in the same sign, they form a wealth-giving yoga.
लग्नस्थौ बुधशुक्रौ तु सप्तमस्थो गुरुर्यदिः ।
बुधदायस्तु प्रबलयोगदो वृषजन्मनः।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/09]
Jupiter, being the significator of wealth and also the lord of the eleventh, represents wealth all the more. Similarly, Mercury, independently, as lord of the second and fifth, is auspicious. Its conjunction or other relationship with Jupiter will be a relationship of two wealth-giving planets. If Mercury and Venus are in Taurus Lagna and Jupiter casts a full aspect on them, Mercury gives yogic results of the highest order in his own dasha.
3. The Result of Gemini (Mithuna) in the Lagna
The lord of Gemini Lagna is Mercury. It represents the west direction. It is of the air element, green in colour, a two-footed sign, masculine, dual-natured (dvisvabhava), vishamodaya (uneven in rising), hot in nature, belongs to common people, roams in forests, makes a sharp sound, has a smooth lustre, is strong by day, and is cruel. It is also called a neuter sign. In this sign no planet is exalted or debilitated. It is counted among the shirshodaya (head-rising) signs. Among the limbs of Kalapurusha, the throat and the arms are represented by Gemini. Its rashi-svara, Mercury, is an indicator of the capacity of the mind.
श्यामेक्षणः कुचिंतमूर्द्धजः स्त्रीक्रीडानुरक्तश्च परेङ्गितज्ञः।
उत्तुङ्गनासः प्रियगीतनृत्तो वसन् सदान्तः सदने च युग्मे ।। फलदिपीका 09/03
In the Phaladeepika, the Acharya has discussed the result of Gemini in the Lagna as follows. If the Lagna is Gemini, the native has dark (shyamala) eyes and curly hair. He has a strong attachment to sporting with young women and is skilled at grasping what is in others’ minds. His nose is raised (prominent). He has a strong interest in music, dance and the like. He resides in his own house.
भोगी वदान्यो बहुपुत्रमित्रः सुदृढमन्त्रः सधनः सुशीलः।
तस्य स्थितिः स्यान्नृपसन्निधाने लग्ने भवेद्वै मिथुनाभिधाने ।।

Similarly, the Jatakabharana says that one born in Gemini Lagna is a pleasure-seeker, generous, with many sons and many friends, high-minded, wealthy, of beautiful nature, and one who lives close to the king.
तृतीयलग्ने तु नरोऽभिजातो विज्ञानविद्यागमशास्त्रलुब्धः।
स्वपक्षपूज्यः परपक्षहन्ता जितेन्द्रियः स्याद्बहुवित्तयुक्तः॥

Next, the view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka is worth noting: if one is born in Gemini Lagna, the person is of noble birth, endowed with special knowledge, a knower of learning and the scriptures, honoured and worshipped by the world, a destroyer of enemies, in control of his senses, and extremely wealthy.
तृतीयस्थौ रविबुधौ बुधदाये समागमे।
बुधो योगप्रदस्सत्यं युग्मजातस्य भाग्यदः।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/01]
According to the Bhavartha Ratnakara, the view worth noting is that if one is born in Gemini Lagna and the Sun and Mercury are in the third house, Mercury proves very wealth-giving in his dasha and antardasha.
भृगुभौमेन्दवः खेटाः धनस्थाने स्थिता यदि ।
शुक्रदाये धनप्राप्ति युग्मजातस्समश्नुते ।। [Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/02]
If Venus, Mars and the Moon are in the second house, in Cancer, then Venus in his dasha-bhukti brings good wealth.
4. The Result of Cancer (Karka) in the Lagna
The lord of Cancer is the Moon. Cancer is a sign with many offspring and many feet, a movable (chara) sign, feminine, rose-coloured (patala), soft-voiced, gentle (saumya), phlegmatic, smooth, of the water element, a water-dweller, samodaya, of Brahmin varna, strong at night, and an attendant of the north direction. The duration of this Lagna each day is two hours and 19 minutes. In this sign Jupiter gives the result of exaltation and Mars that of debilitation. Within it, Jupiter is at highest exaltation at 5 degrees and Mars at deepest debilitation at 28 degrees. The Sun, Mars and Jupiter placed in Cancer behave in a friendly manner, whereas Venus, Mercury and Saturn behave like enemies.
स्त्रीनिर्जितः पीनगलः समित्रो बहवालयस्तुङ्गकटिर्धनाढ्यः।
हृस्वश्च वक्रो द्रुतगः कुलीरे मेधान्वितस्तोयरतोऽल्पपुत्रः ।।
In the Phaladeepika, Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Cancer in the Lagna as follows. A person born in Cancer Lagna is defeated by women and has a thick neck. He has many friends, is the owner of many buildings, and is wealthy. His waist is stout. He is by nature swift-moving and intelligent, has a special attachment to water, and has few children.
मिष्टान्नमुक् साधुरतो विनीतो विलोमबुद्धिर्जलकेलिशीलः।
प्रकृष्टसारोऽतितरामुदारो लग्ने कुलीरे हि नरो भवेद्यः ।।

In the same vein, the author of the Jatakabharana says that one born in Cancer Lagna is fond of sweet food, devoted to sadhus, humble, fickle-minded, fond of water sports, one who grasps the essence of things, and extremely generous.
लग्ने कुलीरे यदि संप्रसूतो नयप्रियोऽसृष्टरुगिष्टयोगः।
सौभाग्ययुक्तो रतिलालसश्च मन्त्रोपसेवी गुरुवत्सलः स्यात्॥

Next, the view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka is worth noting: if one is born in Cancer Lagna, the person is devoted to ethics and sound policy, fond of justice, lives imagining diseases, nurses the delusion of being afflicted by improbable diseases, attains the results he desires, is fortunate, desirous of sexual union, given to deep reflection, always acts after thought and deliberation, and is a favourite of his gurus.
कर्किजातस्य च गुरुर्विशेषेण न योगदः।
मकरे जायमानस्य बुधो योगप्रदो भवेत् ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/01]
According to the Bhavartha Ratnakara, the various views worth noting are that for natives of Cancer Lagna Jupiter does not prove particularly wealth-giving, whereas for those of Capricorn Lagna Mercury is especially wealth-giving.
कर्कटे जायमानस्य भौमो योगप्रदो भवेत्।
पंचमे वाथराज्येवा योगदो भवति ध्रुवम् ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/02]
For natives of Cancer Lagna, Mars is a yoga-giver. But if he falls in the fifth or the tenth, he gives especially auspicious results.
कर्किजातस्य शुक्रस्तु व्ययस्थो धनगोऽपि वा।
योगप्रदस्तु भवतिह्यन्यत्र नहि योगदः ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/03]
If Venus is in the twelfth house (in Gemini), he gives considerable wealth and the like. If he is placed in any other house, he does not give much result.
कर्कटे जायमानस्य चन्द्रो लग्ने स्थितो यदि ।
मेषस्थितो यदि रविः राजयोग उदीरितः ।।
[Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/13]
If, in Cancer Lagna, the Moon is in the Lagna and the Sun is in the tenth, a Rajayoga results.
5. The Result of Leo (Simha) in the Lagna
Leo is called a rajasic sign; the royal planet, the Sun, is its lord. It is placed among the shirshodaya signs. Leo is a fixed sign, of the fire element, strong by day, yellow in colour, lustreless, bilious in constitution, hot in nature, lord of the east direction, of robust body, four-footed, samodayi, loud-sounding, with few offspring, a mountain-dweller, of Kshatriya varna, cruel in nature, and of smoky colour.
पिङ्गेक्षणः स्थूलहनुर्विशालवक्त्रोऽभिमानी सपराक्रमः स्यात्।
कुप्यत्यकार्ये वनशैलगामी मातुर्विधेयः स्थिरधीमंगेन्द्रे ।।

In the Phaladeepika, Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Leo Lagna as follows. A person born in Leo Lagna has yellow eyes and a thick chin. His face is large. He is extremely proud and valorous. He becomes angry over futile matters. He has a tendency to roam in forests and mountain regions. He is especially favoured by his mother and is a person of steady intellect.
कृशोदरश्चारुपराक्रमश्च भोगी भवेदल्पसुतोऽल्पभक्षः ।
सञ्जातबुद्धिर्मनुजोऽभिमाने पञ्चानने सञ्जनने विलग्ने ।।

In the same vein, the author of the Jatakabharana holds that one born in Leo Lagna has a weak waist, is handsome, valorous, a pleasure-seeker, has few sons, eats little, and has an intellect full of pride.
सिंहे विलग्ने तु भवेत् प्रसूतो नरो विभागी रिपुमर्दनश्च ।
लग्ने विधत्ते विधनं मनुष्यं बलाशिनं नित्यविमुक्तलज्जम् ।
निन्द्यं सतां नीचरतं कृतघ्नम्॥

Next, the view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka is worth noting: if a man is born in Leo Lagna, he destroys enemies, is deficient in the fruits of fortune, devoid of wealth, eats much, and always behaves without shame, that is, behaves without restraint or reserve. He is censured by the good, engaged in base deeds, and ungrateful.
सिंहलग्ने तु जातस्य रविसौम्यकुजा यदि ।
परस्परेण संयुक्ता धनबाहुल्यमादिशेत् ।।

According to Acharya Ramanujacharya, other views are worth noting: if one is born in Leo Lagna and the Sun, Mercury and Mars are related to each other (by aspect or conjunction), such a native has abundant wealth.
सिंहलग्ने तु जातस्य रविजीवबुधा यदि।
परस्परेण संयुक्ता धनबाहुल्यमादिशेत् ।।

If the Sun, Jupiter and Mercury are mutually conjoined in the chart of a Leo Lagna native, the native is very wealthy.
सिंहलग्ने तु जातस्य गुरुशुक्रौ न योगदौ ।
योगभंगकरौ किंतुविदुर्येतिषकोत्तमाः।।

For natives of Leo Lagna, the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus is not yoga-giving; on the contrary, it breaks the yoga.
सिंहलग्ने तुजातस्य तृतीयस्थो भृगुश्शुभः ।
राज्यस्थः शुक्रपापस्यान्नयोगं लभते नरः ।।

For natives of Leo Lagna, Venus placed in the third is auspicious, and Venus placed in the tenth gives no yogic result.
सिंहलग्ने तु जातस्य रविसौम्यकुजास्थिताः।
लग्ने बुधदशाकालः धनभाग्यबहुप्रद्रः ।।

If the Sun, Mercury and Mars are placed in Leo Lagna, the native gains wealth and fortune during the dasha of Mercury.
6. The Result of Virgo (Kanya) in the Lagna
Virgo Lagna is a dual-natured (dvisvabhava) Lagna, and its lord is Mercury. The nature of this Lagna is gentle. It is the only sign in which its lord Mercury becomes deeply exalted, at 15 degrees of this very sign, and Mercury’s moolatrikona too lies in this sign, from 16 to 20 degrees. It is a shirshodaya sign. Virgo is tawny (pingala) in colour, two-footed, feminine, dual-natured, lord of the south direction, strong at night, of the air element, cool in nature, samodaya, ground-moving, makes little sound, dwells in sacred ground, is an auspicious sign, of Vaishya varna, lustreless, and has few offspring.
स्रस्तांसबाहुः परवित्तगेहैः सम्पूज्यते सत्यरतः प्रियोक्तिः ।
व्रीडालसाक्षः सुरतप्रियः स्याच्छास्त्रार्थविच्चाल्पसुतोऽङ्गनायाम् ।।

Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Virgo in the Lagna as follows. If the birth Lagna is Virgo, the native’s shoulders and arms are drooping. He is truthful and a pleasant speaker, and gains respect through acquiring the wealth and houses of others. He has eyes full of modesty, is extremely skilled, learned in the scriptures, highly passionate, and has few sons.
कामक्रीड़ासद्गुणज्ञानसत्त्वकौशल्याधैः संयुतः सुप्रसन्नः ।
लग्नं कन्या यस्य जन्यां जघन्यां कन्यां क्षीराब्धेरवाप्नोति नित्यम् ।।

Next, the author of the Jatakabharana, on Virgo in the Lagna, holds that one born in Virgo Lagna is passionate, virtuous, learned, skilled in his work, cheerful, and always blessed with Lakshmi (prosperity).
कन्याविलग्ने तु नरः प्रसूतो विज्ञानविद्यागमशास्त्रलुब्धः ।
लुब्धो गुरुणां रतिलालसश्च मानी च सौभाग्यगुणैश्च युक्तः॥

Similarly, the view of the Vriddha Yavana Jataka is worth noting: if one is born in Virgo Lagna, the person craves special knowledge, pursues learning, is eager to know the meaning of the scriptures, is greedy by nature, seeks the company of gurus, loves sexual union, has honour and respect, and is endowed with fortunate qualities.
कन्यालग्ने तु जातस्य भृगोश्चन्द्रस्य वा यदि ।
संबन्धो यदि विद्यत रवेर्दाये धनागमः ।।

According to Acharya Ramanujacharya, other views are worth noting: if one is born in Virgo Lagna and the Sun is related to Venus, or the Sun to the Moon, by conjunction or otherwise, the Sun makes the native wealthy during his own dasha.
चन्द्रशुक्रौ सप्तमस्थौ लाभस्थो यदि वा गुरु ।
मेष रविर्गुरोर्दाये शुक्रदाये समागमे ।
चतुश्रः पञ्चमा जीवकळत्राणि न संशयः।
कन्यायां जायमानस्य राजतुल्यस्य कामिनः ।।

If Saturn is in the eleventh house, in Cancer, he gives wealth and other auspicious results during his dasha.
Saturn’s moolatrikona sign, Aquarius, falls in the sixth house, so Saturn becomes the lord of an evil house. In fact he is placed in the sixth from the sixth, and also in an enemy sign, so he will give bad results for the sixth house. This means the attainment of auspicious results, because the affliction of evil things brings happiness.
7. The Result of Libra (Tula) in the Lagna
Libra Lagna is the Lagna of a movable (chara) sign, whose lord is Venus. Here Saturn is exalted, and Libra rises head-first. For this reason it is called a shirshodaya sign. It governs the waist region and the vicinity of the liver. Libra is a masculine sign, of many colours, samodayi, hot in nature, lord of the west direction, windy in temperament, smooth, silent, forest-roaming, with few offspring and few companions, of Shudra varna, cruel in nature, strong by day, two-footed, and with limbs in proportion, that is, neither very large nor very small.
चलत्कृशाङ्गोऽल्पसुतोऽतिभक्तो देवद्विजानामटनो द्विनामा।
प्रांशुश्च दक्षः क्रयविक्रयेषु धीरोऽदयस्तौलिनि मध्यवादी ।।

In the Phaladeepika, the result of Libra in the Lagna is discussed as follows. A person whose birth takes place in Libra Lagna is lean, fickle, and tall in body, has few children, is devoted to the gods and to Brahmins, is a wanderer, and is renowned by two names. He is highly skilled in the business of buying and selling, and is a steadfast person of merciless nature.
गुणाधिकत्वाद्द्रविणोपलब्धिर्वाणिज्यकर्मण्यतिनैपुणत्वम्।
पद्मालया तन्निलये न लोला लग्नं तुला चेत्स कुलावतंसः।।

तुलालग्ने तु जातस्य शनिर्योगप्रदो भवेत् ।
तृतीय षष्ठनाथोऽपि गुरुर्योगप्रदो भवेत् । [Bhavartha Ratnakara 01/01]
According to Acharya Ramanujacharya, other views are worth noting: for natives of Libra Lagna, Saturn gives much wealth in his dasha. Jupiter, the lord of the third and sixth houses, also becomes yoga-giving in his dasha.
Saturn is the lord of the kendra and trikona (fourth and fifth) houses and bestows the result of a Rajayoga; but in the author’s opinion, Jupiter, though the lord of two inauspicious houses, the third and the sixth, gives very auspicious results. The reason for this auspicious result appears to be that Jupiter is also a wealth-significator planet, and the third and sixth houses are also upachaya houses (houses of growth); thus Jupiter becomes an auspicious giver from the financial point of view.
तुलालग्ने तु जातस्य रविस्सौरेर्बुधस्य च ।
कुजस्य यदि संबन्धो बहुभाग्यप्रदो भवेत् ।।

If the Sun, Saturn, Mercury and Mars of a Libra Lagna native join one another or establish a relationship, the native is supremely fortunate.

If the Sun, Venus and Mercury are placed in the Lagna of a Libra Lagna native, the native is wealthy and fortunate. The Sun as lord of the eleventh, Venus as lord of the Lagna, and Mercury as lord of the ninth: all these are wealth-giving planets. These are also wealth-giving houses from the Lagna, so by being placed in this house all these planets will give auspicious results such as wealth.
सौम्यमंदसितादित्याः लग्नस्थाश्चन्द्रभूमिजौ।

If, in Libra Lagna, the Sun, Saturn, Venus and Mercury are in the Lagna, and Mars and the Moon are in the seventh house, Mercury will give very good results in his dasha in matters of wealth and the like.
8. The Result of Scorpio (Vrishchika) in the Lagna
The lord of Scorpio Lagna is Mars. It is a fixed (sthira) Lagna, and a feminine sign, white (shubhra) in colour, of the water element, lord of the north direction, strong at night, silent, with many feet, phlegmatic in constitution, samodayi, with many offspring, an auspicious sign, with a smooth body, and of Brahmin varna. In this sign no planet is exalted, but the Moon is certainly debilitated here. The Sun, Jupiter and the Moon are friendly here. Mercury, Venus and Saturn give results like enemies. Scorpio Lagna is generally considered mysterious (occult) in nature.

If Jupiter is placed in the third house, in Capricorn, the native is very generous. If Mercury, the Sun and Venus are in the seventh house, then in the dasha of Mercury the native attains great fame and a Rajayoga.
9. The Result of Sagittarius (Dhanu) in the Lagna
The lord of Sagittarius Lagna is Jupiter, the foremost auspicious planet and, fundamentally, the significator of children. Sagittarius is a masculine sign, of golden colour, a mountain-ranger, samodayi, extremely fierce-sounding, strong by day, lord of the east direction, of firm body, lustreless, yellow in colour, of Kshatriya caste, hot in nature, bilious in constitution, with few offspring and few companions, movable-fixed and dual-natured, two-footed, of the fire element, and of cruel nature.

प्रागल्भ्यवाक्त्यागयुतोऽरिहन्ता साम्नैकसाध्योऽश्विभवो बलाढ्यः।।

Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Sagittarius in the Lagna as follows. One born in Sagittarius Lagna has a long face and neck. His nose and ears are also large. He is extremely industrious, has a stooped body, and is a favourite of the king. His speech shows a glimpse of maturity. He is a renunciant, a conqueror of enemies, one who yields before affectionate behaviour, and a powerful person.
प्राज्ञश्च राज्ञः परिसेवनज्ञः सत्यप्रतिज्ञः सुतरां मनोज्ञः ।
सुज्ञः कलाज्ञश्च धनुर्विधिज्ञश्चेनुर्धनुर्यस्य जनुस्तनुः स्यात् ।।

Similarly, the Jatakabharana says that a man born in Sagittarius Lagna is learned, knows royal service, is resolute, very handsome, wise, knowledgeable in the arts, and knows archery.

According to Acharya Ramanujacharya, other views are worth noting: in Sagittarius Lagna, Saturn placed in the eleventh gives much wealth and the like, whereas in any other Lagna, Saturn placed in the eleventh does not give much wealth and the like.
धनुर्जस्य भृगु रवि भाग्ये मन्दस्तृतीयगः ।
शनिर्दाये तु भवतो भाग्ययोग धनागमौ ।।

If the Sun and Venus are in Leo in the ninth house and Saturn is in the third house, then in Saturn’s dasha the native obtains both fortune and wealth.

10. The Result of Capricorn (Makara) in the Lagna
Capricorn Lagna is governed by Saturn. Capricorn is a movable (chara) sign, of the earth element, fond of little sound, lord of the south direction, a feminine sign, tawny (pingala) in colour, lustreless, gentle, ground-moving, cool in nature, with few offspring, also of the air element, strong at night, four-footed, vishamodayi, of Vaishya varna, and loose-bodied.
अधः कृशः सत्त्वयुतो गृहीतवाक्योऽलसोऽगम्यजराङ्गनेष्टः ।
धर्मध्वजो भाग्ययुतोऽटनश्च वातादितो नक्रभवो विलज्जः।।

In the Phaladeepika, the Acharya has discussed the result of Capricorn in the Lagna as follows. A person who takes birth in Capricorn Lagna has a weak lower body, but such a person has ample inner strength. He accepts the words of others, is lazy, and is attached to women older than himself. Such a person is supremely religious, fortunate and a wanderer. He is afflicted by vata-related ailments and is shameless.
कठिनमूर्तिरतीव शठः पुमान्निजमनोगतकृद् बहुसन्ततिः ।
सुचतुरोऽपि च लुब्धतरो वरो यदि नरो मकरोदयसम्भवः।।

According to the Bhavartha Ratnakara, the various views worth noting are that if the Lagna is Capricorn, Mercury is in the eighth house, and Jupiter placed in the Lagna is aspected by Venus, the native will obtain both longevity and poverty.

11. The Result of Aquarius (Kumbha) in the Lagna
Aquarius is footless, a masculine sign, strong by day, moderate in association with women and moderate in offspring, multicoloured, a forest-roamer, of the air element, smooth, hot in nature, half-voiced, of balanced vata-pitta-kapha constitution, of Shudra varna, lord of the west direction, vishamodayi, and of cruel nature.
प्रच्छन्नपापो घटतुल्यदेहो विघातदक्षोऽध्वसहोऽल्पवित्तः ।
लुब्धः परार्थी क्षयवृद्धियुक्तो घटोद्भवः स्यात्प्रियगन्धपुष्पः ॥

In the Phaladeepika, Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Aquarius in the Lagna as follows. A person who takes birth in Aquarius Lagna is secretly engaged in sinful deeds. The shape of his body is round like a pot. He is skilled at striking blows, capable of enduring the hardships of travel, of little wealth, greedy, and parārthī (parārthī = a benefactor, or one who covets the wealth of others). Waxing and waning alternate in his life, and he is fond of fragrance and flowers.
लोलस्वान्तोऽत्यन्तसञ्जातकामश्चञ्चद्देहः स्नेहकृन्मित्रवर्गे ।
सस्यारम्भः सम्भवैर्युक्सदम्भश्चेत्स्यात्कुम्भे सम्भवो यस्य लग्ने ।।

गुरुवाये मिश्रयोगः शनिदायेव योगदः ।।

If Jupiter is in the Lagna, in Aquarius, and Saturn is in the second house, mixed results will be obtained in Jupiter’s dasha, and Saturn’s dasha will give very good results.
12. The Result of Pisces (Meena) in the Lagna
Pisces is a sign with feet. It is a feminine sign, phlegmatic, of the water element, strong at night, silent, mongoose-coloured (greyish-brown), dual-natured, an aquatic sign, smooth, with offspring, of Brahmin varna, an auspicious sign, lord of the north direction, and is to be known as vishamodaya.
अत्यम्बुपानः समचारुदेहः स्वदारगस्तोयजवित्तभोक्ता।
विद्वान्कृतज्ञोऽभिभवत्यमित्रान् शुभेक्षणो भाग्ययुतोऽन्त्यराशौ ।।

Acharya Mantreshwara has discussed the result of Pisces in the Lagna as follows. A person born in Pisces Lagna drinks a lot of water. His body is well proportioned and beautiful. He is devoted to his wife. He enjoys wealth earned from the trade in aquatic goods, and is learned, grateful, a conqueror of enemies, endowed with auspicious and beautiful eyes, and fortunate.
दक्षोऽल्पभक्षोऽल्पमनोभवश्च सद्रत्नहेमा चपलोऽतिधूर्तः ।
स्याना च नानारचनाविधाने मीनाभिधाने जनने विलग्ने ।।

In the same vein, the author of the Jatakabharana holds that a man born in Pisces Lagna is clever, eats little, has little sexual desire, is endowed with jewels and gold, fickle, cunning, and makes many kinds of things.
